Cambodian Prime Minister Dismisses Rumors of Foreign Electric Taxi Operations

PHNOM PENH, July 15, 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet has strongly refuted reports suggesting that the Cambodian government has permitted Vietnamese or Chinese companies to establish electric taxi services within the country.

In a voice message released this evening, the Prime Minister addressed concerns circulating among motorcycle taxi and three-wheeler taxi drivers. These concerns were based on rumors that the government had allowed foreign electric taxi firms to operate, potentially threatening local jobs. “I have been informed by reliable sources that there is a small group trying to incite protests by spreading false accusations,” Hun Manet stated.

He emphasized that the Royal Government has never issued licenses to any foreign electric taxi companies from Vietnam, China, or any other country. "We have not authorized any foreign entities to launch electric taxi services in Cambodia," Hun Manet clarified, dispelling the rumors categorically.

Further addressing the issue, the Prime Minister reassured that the government remains committed to enhancing the livelihoods of those working in the informal sector, including motorcycle and three-wheeler taxi drivers.

Additionally, Hun Manet warned that legal action might be pursued against individuals propagating the false reports. He urged the drivers not to be swayed by misinformation and to disregard any provocations from the small group behind these rumors.
